Following the elder Kim’s death in December 2011, the state television announced him as the “Great Successor”.
Kim holds many titles, such as Chairman of the Workers Party of Korea, ex-officio Chairman of the Central Military Commission and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission. Kim Jong-Un has been the subject of speculation for around two weeks in the beginning of May, after various reports have claimed that he is in poor health or may have even died.
Kim Jong-Un at that time resurfaced in public view, the North’s state news media reported, contradicting three weeks of rumours and unconfirmed news reports that he was in grave danger after undergoing heart surgery. He appeared at a ceremony at a factory in the city of Sunchon.
Speculation about his health and about who would take over after him began swirling after Mr. Kim missed the state celebrations of his country’s biggest holiday on April 15. On that day is the birthday of his grandfather Kim II-Sung, the country’s founder. Rumors stated that Mr. Kim was in grave danger after a heart valve surgery or in quarantine after contracting Covid-19. It was not the first time that Mr. Kim had disappeared from public view for weeks at a time or been the subject of intense speculation about his health.
