On the day of Independence, here we bring you some interesting and somewhat lesser-known facts about India and its freedom struggle.
India is known as Bharat Ganarajya in Sanskrit. This the reason that Indian is popularly called Bharat in Hindi.
Britishers named our country India because of the River Indus.
India = the land of River Indus.
Lord Mountbatten decided on the date of Independence to be August 15. As it was the day two years earlier that the Japanese had surrendered to him at the end of World War II in Singapore.
August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day in not only India but also in five other countries –
Bhagat Singh was fluent in different languages like French, Swedish, English, Arabic, Hindi, and Punjabi.
Nehru was a style icon! He was featured on Vogue magazine for his famous “Nehru Jacket”
India didn’t have any National Anthem when it got independent.
“Jana Gana Mana” was written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911 and was officially adopted in 1950 when it became Republic.
After India’s independence, Portugal amended its constitution and declared Goa as a Portuguese state. Indian troops invaded Goa on December 19, 1961, and annexed it to India.
Hindi was declared as the official language of India on 14th September 1949.
It is not the national language of the country. Article 343 of the Indian Constitution mentions Hindi in Devnagari script as the official language of India.
Cyril John Radcliffe, despite the fact that he had never been to India, was given the chairmanship of Indian Boundary committees and had to draw the boundaries of the two nations, India and Pakistan.
It is said that he was disheartened at the chaos caused by his decision, displacing millions of people from their homes, and he refused the salary of Rs.40,000
Hansa Jivraj Mehta represented Free India’s Parliament along with 15 other women.
“The world can thank a daughter of India, Dr. Hansa Mehta, for replacing the phrase in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR),”

During one procession, she continued to lead with the Indian flag even after being shot thrice. She kept shouting “Vande Mataram”. The first statue of a woman was put up in Kolkata, in Independent India and that was Hazra’s in 1977. The statue stands at the spot where she was killed in Tamluk. Even Hazra Road in Kolkata is also named after her.
Madam Cama, who is a well – known freedom fighter emphasized on equality between men and women. She gave away all her assets to help out an orphanage for young girls. As an Indian ambassador, she also traveled to Germany in 1907 to hoist the Indian National flag.
Lakshmi Sahgal was a former Indian Army officer called Captain Lakshmi. She picked up a Gun for Indian National Army (INA) founded by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and led it like a tigress in the struggle for Freedom. She was in charge of establishing and leading the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, comprising women soldiers. Also before joining INA, she had served a sentence in a Burma prison for her role in World War II.
Sucheta Kriplani was a Gandhian, Indian freedom fighter and politician. Joined Indian National Congress and became the first woman Chief Minister of an Indian State (UP) and also founded the All India Mahila Congress in 1940. On 15th August 1947, she sang Vande Mataram in the Constituent Assembly.
Jhalkari Bai was the one who played a very crucial role in the battle of Jhansi as she disguised herself as Rani Laxmibai and took command of the army, thus giving the real queen a chance to escape in the meantime.
Popular actress Ankita Lokhande plays role of Jhalkari Bai in a recent movie of Kangna Ranaut called Manikarnika
